Select One: Episode 4
If you're ever talking to your friends about creative genius – specifically the creative genius and work ethic of 21st century artists that you should try your best to emulate – make sure that everyone's heard of Somba. Let me ask you this: how many beat producers do you know that wake up and crank out a handful of beats before touching their phone? And out of that group, how many of them are also their own audio mixing and mastering engineers? Are they also fully-fledged composers and songwriters? What about videographers? Did I lose you? If so, that's understandable. However, Somba plays all of these roles, including lead producer in Burlington, Vermont's rising collective 99 Neighbors. I don't imagine there are too many people on the planet that can fill all of those shoes with such quality the way that he does. Under his lead production and engineering, 99's debut album, Television, reached 1 million streams within just 2 1/2 months of being released. Unreal. Fortunately enough for us, in this episode of Select One, I walked around Burlington and asked him about his philosophy behind his concepts, his workflow, and much more.
