Select One: Episode 6

"Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And, weak men create hard times." - G. Michael Hopf's quote has been forever stuck in my head since I sat down with Charlie "Chyse Mayne" Atkins. The thing that touched me the most about this California-born singer/rapper is that, similarly to myself, despite being brought up in– how should I say–  less than ideal circumstances, he's maintained the utmost poise and character as a single father, working full time, GRINDING, all the while continuing to consistently chase his career as a respected artist. He's one of the few artists out here that has been going as far as paying the full price, out-of-pocket, funding high quality music videos for his songs– all of which give you a look inside the grit of what it means to be a self-made, independent artist. In this episode of Select One, I link up with him in downtown Burlington and sit down to get an idea of his motivations, family history, and I dive in deep to try answering the question, "How much sacrificing goes into being a successful artist?" Being a single father, as you could imagine, changes things.
